The NSG Saerbecker wetland is about 250 hectares and was designated as a protected area in 1983. It is part of the large complex of protected areas in North Rhine-Westphalia, the EU bird sanctuary "Feuchtwiesen im northern Münsterland", and thus part of the Natura2000 network of protected areas. The wet and wet meadows were able to develop again by rewetting and laying blanks. Such meadow types used to be found almost everywhere in the Münsterland. In the NSG there are again rare plants e.g. medium sundew, lung gentian, swamp blood-eye, broad-leaved orchid. The breeding bird population has also developed positively. The lapwing, black-tailed godwit, curlew (more than 20 breeding pairs per year), meadow pipit, red-backed or oriole breed here.
More than 100 migratory bird species stop here on their travels, including many Arctic geese, ducks (shovelers) and waders.
From the observation tower, the birds can be easily observed on the large blanks. But since the area is open you can see the birds everywhere.
The natural tourism cycle route "Curlew route" leads through the area.
It is advisable to take binoculars with you in any case.
Very suitable for families as there is hardly any (narrow street) or no (meadow paths) car traffic through the area.

This is very interesting for nature lovers interested in ornithology. Unfortunately, the bird species that are native here have a hard time elsewhere. Take binoculars with you!
