Around 1855, Mads Illum established a berth on the outer side of the west pier at Middelfart Harbor. He specialized in the construction of dinghies for use in guinea pig fishing, angling, and piloting, as well as mainline and towed dinghies for bottom net fishing.

From the late 1950s onward, the shipyard's heyday began with the construction of a large number of fishing boats for Esbjerg and especially for Thyborøn, where the fishing skipper Hans Kirk was the buyer. The largest fishing boat built at the shipyard was the 75-ton "Jens Kirk," built for Hans Kirk in 1971. During these years, the shipyard employed up to a dozen men.

With the decline of the Danish fishing industry, wooden fishing boats for fishing came to an end in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the shipyard's main activity was the repair of old wooden ships.

The shipyard continued this repair business. Within the last year, the shipyard has also built three new dinghies.

Today, the shipyard operates as a museum shipyard and center for maritime history, with a focus on the region's coastal culture and wooden shipbuilding traditions.

The purpose of the Lillebælt-Værftet association is to operate the old ship and boat building in Middelfart under the name Lillebælt-Værftet, as well as make premises available for the connected dinghy / boat guilds for maintenance, restoration and newbuilding of wooden ships and dinghies.
