In memory of Queen Caroline Mathilde, who died in Celle
from Denmark, the Lüneburg knights and knights founded this monument in 1784 in the French garden near the castle. It was designed by the famous sculptor and painter Adam Friedrich Oeser, the director of the "drawing, Mahlerey, and architecture academy" in Leipzig.
The monument is an allegorical representation. On a round base stands the urn decorated with the image of the queen. A female figure resting on clouds crowns the vessel with laurel wreath and palm branches, the symbols of virtue and glory. They stand for the innocence of the queen against the slander brought to her. The mother and her children symbolize the love of the Hanoverian people for the queen banished to Celle. The monument bears the following inscription:
CAROL (ina) MATH (ildis) DAN (iae) ET NORWEG (iae) REG (ina) NAT (a) D (ies) XXII. July MDCCLI, DEN (ata) D (ies) X. MAY MDCCLXXV.
    O (rdo) E (questris) L (uneburgensis) P (oni) C (uravit).
(Caroline Mathilde, Queen of Denmark and Norway, born on July 22, 1751, died on May 10, 1775. The Lüneburg Knights have left this monument).
