Fort Giessen is part of the New Dutch Waterline (NHW). It was built around 1880 and was used to repel an attack on Woudrichem. Fortunately, this never happened, although the fort was manned during the mobilization in the First World War (1914-1918).

Giessen Castle once stood in Giessen. The village already had a tuff church in the 11th century. Around 1200, the Meuse changed its course and broke through the bed of the Alm, and then flowed northwest. In this way the church was also undermined and rebuilt on a mound outside the dike.
