Not only one cross greets hikers here, but a group of three crosses—as the name "Three Crosses Mountain" suggests—we find at this spot. A wayside cross or summit cross commemorates Jesus Christ, specifically the middle one (bearing the INRI inscription; this abbreviation in Latin stands for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews"). The other two are not here without reason: According to biblical tradition, Jesus Christ was not condemned to death by crucifixion and executed alone, but together with two criminals (see, for example, the Gospel of Luke 22:33):
