A town located only 119 kilometers from Colombo, Galle has played an important role in Sri Lankas history as its place as a port city. There are influences from many who held power here: The Portuguese in the 16th century and the British in the 18th century. Most recently, in 2004, the city made news again for the sweeping Boxing Day Tsunami. Fortunately, the town has been able to recover and it is a well-known place for tourists looking for a more luxurious vacation.
