        The market square and the streets of the city center were the locations of the four-yearly grocers' markets. In the 19th century, more markets were added: three livestock markets per year, a weekly fruit market, and finally a pig market once a month, as well as the annual shooting market from 1830.

        The predecessor of today's Old Town Hall was probably a stately half-timbered building with an open market hall, the scene of the weekly markets that took place twice a week for centuries. On September 1, 1717, a lightning strike in the tower of the neighboring town church caused the great town fire, which also destroyed the town hall. It was rebuilt in late Baroque style from red sandstone by 1723. The reconstruction was largely carried out by the citizens themselves; 250 guilders were given as "electoral most gracious beystewer" for all the buildings that were affected.
