North of the village of Loon op Zand, behind Camping Hoeve Land van Kleef and about a hundred meters east of the Waalwijksebaan, there is a horse pasture in the forest with a source mountain. This meadow, locally known as "de Kerkenakker", with sand banks on the north and west sides, is an important archaeological monument.

The old parish church of Loon op Zand, dedicated to Saint Willibrord (658-739), the patron saint of the parish, stood here for centuries. The oldest mention of this church comes from 1233, when Henry I, Duke of Brabant, gave the abbey of Tongerlo the right to appoint priests. Archaeological research shows that there was already a church there around 1150. The parish then included the entire current municipality of Loon op Zand, Sprang and perhaps also the eastern part of Dongen. Until the Reformation, the church in Sprang was a chapel that depended on the church on the Kerkenakker.

North of the village of Loon op Zand, behind Camping Farm Land van Kleef and about a hundred meters to the east of the Waalwijksebaan, there is a horse meadow in the forest with a spring mountain in that meadow.

This meadow, known locally as "de Kerkenakker", with the adjacent sand walls to the north and west of it, is an archaeological monument and an important place for the history of Loon op Zand and the surrounding area.

The old parish church of Loon op Zand was located here for centuries. This church was dedicated to Saint Willibrord (658-739) who is once again the patron of the parish.

The oldest record of this church we know dates from 1233.

Henry I, Duke of Brabant, then gave the abbey of Tongerlo the right to appoint the priests here.

Archaeological research has shown that there was almost certainly a church on this site around 1150.

The parish encompassed the entire current municipality of Loon op Zand, but also Sprang and perhaps also the eastern part of Dongen.

Until the Reformation, the monumental late medieval church in Sprang was a chapel in the parish of Loon op Zand and thus depended on the church on the Kerkenakker.

Interesting little monument in honour of a chapel that was never built.
