The synagogue in Berkach is the only synagogue in the surrounding area that was not destroyed during the Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938. Due to political pressure, the Jewish community was forced to sell it in 1939. During the GDR era, the half-timbered building was used for agricultural storage and as a blacksmith's shop. Starting in 1990, the building was completely renovated and rededicated as a synagogue in 1991.
