After his death in 1891, his sons sold part of the factory premises with the Alizarin factory in Wiesdorf to the Elberfeld paint factories vorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co AG. Carl Leverkus' factory was the cornerstone of what is now Bayer AG in Leverkusen.

Cycling

Carl Leverkus developed a process for the production of artificial ultramarine in the 1830s. This almost insoluble pigment was widely used in painting, in the production of lacquers and paints, and in the "blueing" of paper, yarn and all other materials that were optically "whitened" by the complementary pigments. As "washing blue", it was used around the world until modern detergents became widespread in the middle of the 20th century to lighten white laundry. With the relocation of its factory from Wermelskirchen to Wiesdorf am Rhein, Leverkus established the chemical site and later the city of Leverkusen.
