Exact data on the beginning and duration of the church building and the builder are unknown. It is believed that the initiative for building the church came from Kaiserswerth Abbey or Gerresheim Abbey. The core of the church (west tower, nave, choir square with apse) was probably built in the second half of the 12th century. Even this building was significantly larger than the churches in the region. The patronage of the church was exercised by the lords of Haus Unterbach, who were also buried in the church.
