The Kleine Waterpoort is also called De Ruyterpoort, because in 1665 the fleet of the West India Company came ashore in Delfzijl thanks to Michiel de Ruyter.
Local painters' associations painted the scene on the walls of the gate. The Kleine waterpoort was built to protect the residents of Delfzijl against high water. When the water threatens to rise, the revolving door can be closed manually.
