Commissioner Maigret, the main character from Maigret in Holland, arrived here by train in 1929. He had come from Paris to solve the murder of Conrad Poppinga.
At the time, the station was situated on the edge of a park with tall trees, a music temple and rose beds along sharply edged lawns. The park has disappeared, but the station is exactly the same. The station was built in 1883, after the Groningen-Delfzijl railway line was completed in 1880. The building consists of a central tower and two low side wings. The hipped roofs are covered with imitation slate. Red and yellow stones alternate and the doors and windows have hard stone windowsills. The canopy over the platform is supported by cast iron columns with ionic decorations.
