According to a legend, an allegedly pious hermit used to live near the Leutkirche, which stands lonely in the field outside Oberschopfheim. One night a girl is said to have sneaked to the brightly lit hermitage as a test of courage. But instead of finding the hermit praying, she watched him hide a corpse in a hole under the floor of the house. When the house was later searched, the remains of numerous murdered people were found. The hermit was executed as a robbery, according to legend. Although a priest conjured and banished his haunted spirit, the Leutkirche is said to have been unsettling to many people even later. This may also be due to the unusual, lonely location in the open field. Because the village to which the little church originally belonged gradually disappeared at the end of the late Middle Ages.
