Next to the cross there is an atonement cross / murder stone.

In the Middle Ages, many atonements were set up - for people who died through no fault of their own. The stone crosses were supposed to save the soul of the deceased.

From around the year 1300 the atonement stones were used to commemorate people who had died as a result of murder, manslaughter or accidents.

The belief of the people suggested that the salvation of the deceased, who had not received a sacrament of death, could be saved if those who pass by the stone cross intercede for the dead. These memorials were usually erected by the perpetrator himself or by relatives.
