On February 1, 1861, a flood disaster struck Leeuwen due to drifting ice. Due to a breakthrough of the Waalbandijk, the entire Land van Maas and Waal was flooded and 37 people drowned. It was not until May that most of the water had disappeared. In the year after the disaster, it was decided to erect a memorial, but implementation was not forthcoming. King Willem III celebrated his silver jubilee in 1874. It was decided to erect a monument in memory of the disaster and as "proof of special tribute and gratitude for what H.M. did in 1861 to alleviate the need". The monument was unveiled on October 28, 1874.

The monument consists of a high column on a square base. A royal crown has been placed on top of the column, and a small wreath in relief at the base. The plinth has recessed surfaces on all sides, in which a plaque with inscription is placed.
