The Serpentine was created in 1730 at the behest of Queen Caroline. It's an elegantly curved lake within Hyde Park. Originally river fed, the water now comes from three boreholes within the park.
The Serpentine has always been used for leisure and pleasure. Swimming, boating and occasionally ice skating as well as walking, riding or cycling around its banks. It was used in some of the swimming and triathlon events in the London 2012 Olympics.
