Ponte della Maddalena, which owes its name to the presence of a nearby Maddalena Oratory, is a nice stone bridge on the Serchio river near Borgo a Mozzano, in the province of Lucca.
Compared to the numerous other medieval bridges, this was of great importance because it represented a vital point of crossing the river on the Via Francigena.

Due to its shape and height (38 m.), its wide and particular arch, this construction, considered incredible and almost supernatural at that time, became the subject of many legends.

The Ponte della Maddalena is commonly known as the "Devil's Bridge" because, like many other artifacts that seemed impossible to the contemporaries, popular legend attributed its construction to the devil: the superintendent of the construction, desperate for the delay in the committed works, would have sold his soul to the devil, who negotiated the completion of the works in exchange for the soul of the first being to cross the bridge.
