The Honterus monument was inaugurated on August 21, 1898 on the occasion of the 400th birthday of the humanist and reformer Johannes Honterus (1498-1549). It is the work of the Berlin sculptor Harro Magnussen (1861-1908). At the base of the monument there were two relief panels made of bronze (each 81 cm wide and 70 cm high). The western panel shows Honterus in his printing works, the first surviving prints of which date from 1539.
