Characteristic of this area is the alternation between dry and wet parts. The Cartierheide consists of a large number of fens and is crossed by the Dalemstroompje, the upper course of which was restored in 1994. The stream originates from the Pannegoorven and flows into the Groote Beerze. The variation of these wet and dry areas in open and closed landscapes makes the heathland an important biotope for countless plant and animal species.
