The parish of Hernals was probably founded around the middle of the 13th century. 1252 is the first time a Hartwicus, pastor of Als (plebanus de Als), is mentioned. The first secured documentary mention of a church in Als consecrated to St. Bartholomew dates back to 1301. The founders of the church were probably the Lords of Als, who also gave the name of the small wine-growing village "Hernals" (Lords Als) and later on the Alsbach for the entire 17th district of Vienna.

After its reconstruction, it became an Evangelical Lutheran church in 1548 or 1568. Due to the violent Counter-Reformation under Emperor Ferdinand II, the Hernals parish church became Roman Catholic again in 1625.
