Margrave Albrecht Achilles had the "old castle" in Neustadt a.d.Aisch built as a hunting castle in 1448, protected by a moat. Access is only possible via the drawbridge. The hexagonal stair tower is only added to the castle later.

Anna von Sachsen, the wife of Albrecht Achilles, uses the castle as a widow's residence. Even after that, it served as a residence for members of the margravial family until 1626. After the completion of the New Palace in 1626, the respective provincial governors used it as an apartment.
