It always starts almost at sea level, but then quickly recognizes that Corsica is a mountain in the Mediterranean. The long ascent to the descent into the Tartagine valley takes you through mostly sparsely populated areas, as is usually the case on the island, but rarely a small mountain village in the middle of the maquis and olive trees or vineyards.
