The Notte, which was expanded with barrages, became popularly known as the Notte Canal. In the past, the Notte was of considerable importance for supplying Berlin with agricultural products and building materials. Among other things, the Sperenberg gypsum stones, but also the products of numerous brickworks and gravel pits were transported by water.

The Notte is a tributary of the Dahme. It rises south of Sperenberg and flows into the Dahme near Königs Wusterhausen. The Notte was the first longer waterway in the Mark Brandenburg that was made navigable by humans. The first expansion took place under Elector Joachim II around 1568.
