Today, Cartmel Priory is the parish church of Cartmel, though it is a building steeped in history and culture. It was founded in 1189 by William Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke, as an Augustine priory.
In 1281, the Archbishop of York had to intervene with the priory, following disciplinary problems with its inhabitants. It suffered damage at the hands of the marauding Scots under Robert the Bruce in 1322. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the early 1530s, the villagers of Carmel claimed the building as their parish church.
