Lede Castle, formerly Snail Castle in Bonn-Vilich
Lede moated castle, which dates back to the early 13th century, is located on the outskirts of Bonn-Vilich and is a typical example of a Rhenish lowland castle. Parts of the former Romanesque residential tower with domed windows are still preserved today. A three-arched stone bridge leads to the castle house, which is surrounded by a moat.
In the 14th century it became the ancestral seat of the knight Johann Schilling von Vilich, who in 1361 left the wineries in Ahrweiler to Archbishop Wilhelm von Gennep of Cologne in return for his generous support for the upkeep of the castle. During this time, the originally quadrangular building, the former residential tower, was converted into a three-winged complex, which underwent numerous conversions and additions up to the 20th century.
