In the lake itself, a few meters from the lake shore, there is a boulder with a stone cross and a smaller metal cross on top, which is also called the cross stone. According to legend, the Kreuzstein is reminiscent of a horse-drawn carriage accident in the 18th century in which all of the occupants drowned. The border between the communities of St. Gilgen and Mondsee - and thus between the states of Salzburg and Upper Austria - runs along the southern shore of the Mondsee. Thus, the boulder Kreuzstein - in contrast to the place Kreuzstein - is already in the municipality of the Mondsee market and thus in the province of Upper Austria.

The village includes some locations. The hamlet of Kienberg is located near Scharfling on the B154 Mondsee road, directly on the Upper Austrian border. Here the L217 Kienbergwandstraße branches off eastwards, which leads with a tunnel through the Kienbergwand, the northern part of the Schafberg into the Mondsee. This is followed by the Rotten Kreuzstein and Wiesenau on the Mondsee shore. At See, which is again Upper Austrian, the Kienbergwandstrasse joins the B151 Attersee Strasse, while the locations on the right bank of the Seeache, the stream from Mondsee to Attersee, continue to be Salzburg. This is where the Rotte Letten rennet cutter follows. Oberburgau has around 50 addresses with around 120 residents.

distinctive symbol of the Mondsee in a special place: directly in front of the entrance to the Kienberg tunnel. an approx. 2m higher rock with a nearly 2m high cross and a smaller one next to it.
maybe an accident happened here centuries ago? the story behind it would be interesting.
definitely a picturesque place with a view to the west to the Drachenwand. especially in the evening towards sunset

A nice little waterfall with shower facilities should also be a 20-minute walk from here. But we didn't see it.

The Kreuzstein is a boulder in the Mondsee in Upper Austria in Austria. It is located in the shallow water just a few meters from the eastern south bank, which here forms the border with the State of Salzburg, here the municipality of Sankt Gilgen, cadastral municipality of Oberburgau. [1]

The limestone boulder is badly eroded, especially at its base, so that it does not protrude vertically, but overhangs around 1.9 m from the water. It has a diameter of 2.1 m at the top, but only 1.3 m at the base.

The boulder bears a vertically rising and around 1.8 m high Christian cross made of stone, which probably gave it its name, as well as a smaller inclined (height about 80 cm) pagan cross of animation made of iron next to it.

The Kreuzstein gave its name to the district of the same name in the municipality of Sankt Gilgen (fish farm Kreuzstein am Mondsee), as well as the Kreuzstein waterfall on the Altersbach

The boulder is badly eroded and is wider at the top! There are 2 crosses on the stone, a Christian (the larger of the two) and a pagan.
