Best Hikes to Schafberg
Tips
  • The view from the Schafberg is simply phenomenal. The 360-degree panorama shows the Salzkammergut and its lakes from their most beautiful side. In nice, clear weather, the view even extends to Lake Chiemsee, the Bohemian Forest, the Dachstein and the Hohe Tauern. The climb was definitely worth it.

  • On the Schafberg there is usually a lot of excitement due to the rack railway.
If you want to get on foot and are not so mountain run, or sure-footed, should rise above the south side.
On the north side, a challenging and varied trail leads along, which is also insured in the upper part with wire ropes.

  • When I see the lake, I do not need a sea anymore.
From the mountain I have seen 7 lakes. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schafberg_(Salzkammergut- Mountains) writes there are even 13 lakes to see.

  • (+) The hike from Mondsee to the Schafberg via the Eisenaueralm and on to the Himmelpforte to the summit is an absolute highlight!
(-) The mountain restaurant Himmelspforte the total tourist rip-off, cheese dumpling soup in the Puppenhäferl and extremely overpriced. Kaiserschmarrn = children's portion. Was criticized, they don't care because of more and more tourists. So watch and see beforehand! ;-)

  • A wonderful view of the Wofgangssee and the Salzkammergut. It is especially breathtaking at dawn, before that you can spend the night in the mountain hotel. Very nice is the hike to the valley.

  • We went up with the rack railway. First went to the restaurant where you can sit and enjoy the view. Then climbed up where you look the other way
The 360 degree panorama shows the Salzkammergut and its lakes from their most beautiful side.
The descent down to St. Wolfgang was very difficult, partly due to a detour due to work in the forest. It had rained heavily and the roads through the forest were very slippery. Instead of about 6 km we eventually walked 11 km down.
We liked it very much. Next day muscle pain in the thighs and calves.

  • If you go about 20 minutes to the east to the Spinner (not dangerous) you can still have wonderful views over the edge down to the Suissensee and to the Eisenaualm and back to the Schafberg summit.

  • As an alternative to the ascent with the cog railway (not exactly cheap, but still worth seeing), the option "on foot" is worthwhile - there are a few options here, be it on the front, i.e. the side facing the WOLFGANGSEE, or on the back with one fantastic finish to the HIMMELSPFORTE (quite steep & partly insured).

  • Great all-round view. Definitely hike up - it is exhausting, but doable. The panorama rewards the effort in many ways.

  • Wonderful but challenging hike over the Mönschsee ... from the Gatshof at Himmelpforte into the valley it is 3.5 hours ... you bend your knees! (alternatively by train down)

  • Unique view of Wolfgangsee, Fuschlsee, Zeller- or Irrsee, Mondsee and Attersee!
If you go up to the east corner in the direction of Spinnerin you can still see down to the Suissensee and the Schwarzensee!
