A must-see: the “Lower Gate”, also known as the “City Tower”. The striking gate tower at the western end of the market square is Günzburg's landmark.
June 6, 2019
The fountain by the sculptor Jan Bormann from Castrop-Rauxel, inaugurated as part of the redesign of the market square (1983/84), combines many details from the town's history. There lies the river deity Guntia, the town's namesake, in the octagonal water basin. On the edge of the basin are a Roman coin, a medallion depicting various towers of the city and a Maria Theresa thaler. The tetrakaidecahedron (fourteen-sided) is adorned with the coat of arms of the town of Sternberg (reminiscent of the expellees from Sternberg/Moravia, for whom Günzburg took over the sponsorship in 1955), the coat of arms of the town of Günzburg, the Austrian double-headed eagle and the large Bavarian state coat of arms. The wreath underneath shows the three crowned swan necks from the coat of arms of the bailiff Baron Christoph von Ramschwag (also in the weather vane on the lower gate). The vernacular made geese out of these noble animals, and that was the nickname for all Günzburgers - the "Gäiskräga".
