The former Frederiksoord-Wilhelminaoord working colony of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid (1818) has been designated as a protected village view. This form of poverty alleviation through job creation resulted in a tightly organized block-shaped landscape, consisting of straight intersecting axes of avenues, roads, ditches and colonial houses and farms oriented towards the roads in the middle of the Westerbeeksloot estate dating from the seventeenth century, which was built early in the 19th century. nineteenth century mainly consisted of unexplored wastelands. Workshops and facilities, such as a bakery and a horticultural school, arose at the intersections of roads and avenues.
