Cottessen was cultivated from the Bellet square farm, a farm that has been located there since the 13th century or earlier. Above the gate, the farm bears a facade stone with the coat of arms of the Burscheid Abbey with the Latin motto Dominus Providebit ("The Lord will provide").
This used to be a poor region in Limburg and as a result the old half-timbered houses have often been retained. Around this time Cottessen was still called Kothausen. Cottessen, together with Camerig, is a protected villagescape.
The first Tranchot maps of this area from around 1760 show 14 farms or houses. In 2013, that number is still the same and the appearance of the hamlet has remained virtually unchanged.

Time seems to have stood still here. The steep hills made the area difficult to access for agriculture, meaning that agricultural expansion has hardly taken place. As a result, many sunken roads, graves, standard orchards, groves, spring areas and hawthorn hedges have been preserved in the rich small-scale cultural landscape. The Berversbergbeek flows through Cottessen, further south is the Cottesserbeek and further north is the Belleterbeek.

The variation in landscape elements means there is a rich flora and fauna. Badgers are regularly spotted in graves. The territory of the rare hazel dormouse is being improved on the edge of the Vijlenerbos.
