Best Hiking Routes to Luther Trail Saxony-Anhalt

Tips

  • In Saxony & Thuringia, the signage & information on the Luther Trails is better, since Saxony-Anhalt still has some catching up to do.

  • Easy hiking trail through the "Südliche Goitzsche" nature reserve. Remaining holes on the former opencast mining site were flooded and the renaturation is largely being carried out naturally.

  • The Saxony-Anhalt Luther Trail is a 410 km long pilgrimage route from Wittenberg via Eisleben to Mansfeld.
The state project for the Luther Decade (2008-2017) served to prepare for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017.
The work of the reformer Martin Luther is commemorated on two routes with 34 stations such as the Paul Gerhardt Chapel in Gräfenhainichen, the Wörlitzer Park, the Francke Foundations in Halle and the Dübener Heide.
The entire route is marked with an "L" and opened on March 28, 2008.
The initiative was suggested by the former Honorary Consul of Botswana, Wolf von Bila (1941-2012), who was able to win over the Protestant Church, tourism associations and the Saxony-Anhalt Mountain and Hiking Association to support the project.
The former Bishop of the Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia Evangelical Church and former Council President of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Wolfgang Huber, has assumed the patronage.
In 2009, the Federal Ministry of Transport awarded the Luther Trail the national prize for integrated urban development and building culture.
In August 2010, the governments of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt agreed to extend the Luther Trail towards Saxony.
By extending the existing route, Bad Düben, Eilenburg, Leipzig, Altenburg (connecting to the Luther Trail in Thuringia) and Zwickau became stations on the western branch.
The eastern branch leads from Zwickau via Grimma and Torgau back to Wittenberg.
