The Exmoor pony originally comes from Exmoor in the south-west of England. It is a very hilly, often uncultivable landscape, in which gorse, heath and bushes predominate in large parts. Some Exmoor pony herds have been able to survive here almost in the wild. Exmoor ponies are one of the few "real" wild horses, as they are not domestic horses that have been released into the wild, like many horses in other free-living herds. They have been breeding there in Exmoor for thousands of years without human intervention.

The grass in the pasture is sufficient for the ponies' diet all year round. In winter, they are fed exclusively with hay. Bread and grain are not good for the Exmoor ponies at all. They get digestive problems and eczema. When they get eczema, their fur falls out in certain places and they get scabby patches. This means: please do not feed them!
