In 1820 the "deep Kautenbacher tunnel" between the settlement of Bad Wildstein and the former village of Kautenbach, now part of the city of Traben-Trarbach, was driven to dissolve water and extract it.

A lukewarm spring was encountered for the first time and was used by the miners for bathing. Today the warm tunnel water runs heavily into the Kautenbach, which is colored red-yellow in the outlet area on the bottom of the brook.
