The Drachenfels castle ruins in the Siebengebirge are the remains of a hilltop castle at 321 m above sea level, which was begun in 1138 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Arnold I, and bought and completed in 1149 by Gerhard von Are, the provost of the St. Cassius Foundation in Bonn. It stands on the Drachenfels mountain of the same name. The most famous burgrave, Godart, became very wealthy thanks to the trachyte from the Drachenfels, the most important building material for Cologne Cathedral.

In 1632, Protestant Swedish troops conquered the Drachenfels, but were expelled by Spanish troops the following year. This prompted the Cologne Elector Ferdinand to demolish the outer works in 1634 to prevent further fighting for control of the castle. After the damage up to 1634, the castle was not repaired.

Over time, the trachyte quarries grew right up to the summit. When complete destruction threatened in 1807, mining was banned.
