"Cloudy and gloomy, this is how swampy and muddy lowlands used to have the effect of the people who lived in their vicinity. This also explains the name of the Düsterdieker Lowlands, for the 1132 hectare nature reserve. The former fen can only be guessed at today, the Humans have redesigned the landscape for their own purposes. Nevertheless, many meadows in the Düsterdieker lowlands are still moist enough to provide a suitable habitat for meadow breeders such as the curlew, lapwing and meadow pipit or plants such as spotted orchid, devil's bite or meadow silage. "

The nature reserve (NSG) Düsterdieker Niederung near Westerkappeln has been under protection with a good 1000 hectares since 1983. It is part of one of the largest protected area complexes in North Rhine-Westphalia, the EU bird sanctuary "Düsterdieker Niederung" and thus belongs to the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas.
