The nature reserve (NSG) Düsterdieker Niederung near Westerkappeln has been under protection with a good 1000 hectares since 1983. It is part of one of the largest protected area complexes in North Rhine-Westphalia, the EU bird sanctuary "Düsterdieker Niederung" and thus belongs to the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas.
