In 1892 a brick factory was established in Groenlo. The clay for the production of roof tiles and bricks was obtained from the clay pits. In January 1975 the end of the Groenlo Stone Age came when the brick kiln stopped production. This 30 hectare area has since developed into a unique area and has been made accessible as the De Leemputten Nature Park through a designated hiking trail since 1978. A diverse landscape with a wide variety of plant and animal species stretches between small lakes.

Very nice area for hiking - a bit small for longer tours, but in a beautiful dangling from the Zwillbrocker Venn. The trails can be a bit muddy and slippery after rain.
