The wide, open expanse of Burgh Marsh is a glorious landscape. Birdwatchers will revel at the sights to the north, whilst fans of Lakeland will be treated to a superb distant view of the Northern Fells to the south.
King Edward I died of dysentery whilst camped on the marsh planning an attack against the Scots. A statue in the nearby village stands in his memory.
In 1964, local historian Jim Templeton took a photo of his daughter on the marsh. When the photo was developed, there appeared to be a spectral spaceman behind the girl. So the legend of the Solway Firth Spaceman was born.
The marsh is prone to flooding at high tide and there are times when the high waters make the road impassable.
