"Uncle Hermann is a bronze statue that has been welcoming visitors arriving at the entrance to Osterholz-Scharmbeck since July 2008. Its name comes from an "Uncle Hermann" who lived here around 1900 and worked as a ferryman at Tietjens Hütte. According to the artist Paul Mahrt, who created the bronze figure and had it cast in the Rieke workshop in Worpswede, does not represent the historical figure in an objective way. Rather, it represents the peat boatmen and ferrymen of their time.

The work of art was purchased by the city with the help of donations from the Klosterholz raffle and the Volksbank. It stands on a piece of old quay wall made of bricks from the old Kaiserschleuse in Bremerhaven."
