Where does the expression: "His life hangs by a thread" come from?

It is explained at this historical border column:

Elkofen Castle was the center of a Hofmark with its own lower jurisdiction. In the case of serious crimes such as murder, robbery or rape, the suspects had to be handed over to the high court in Markt Schwaben.

For this purpose, the suspects were tied to this border pillar made of tuff with a silk thread. Then the henchman of the Swabian graveyard was called. If this did not appear despite three requests, the suspect had to be released.

I don't think that happened often, but that's how the established phrase about life hanging by a thread came about.
