    The story of the "Hartz and cordial" TV scene lies in the east of Mannheim-Waldhof. This is where the so-called "Benz barracks" are located, a social hot spot in the city. Daimler manufactures engines and buses nearby, which is why the area is known as "Benz barracks. Daimler is one of the most glamorous employers in the region, but the often hard life of the residents of the Benz barracks takes place next door.

    In 1886, Carl Benz was the first automobile in the world to register a patent for his "motor vehicle", and in the same year the cradle of the automobile was in the factory premises acquired by Carl Benz on today's MWM site in Neckarstadt. The history of the most famous product of the Rhine-Neckar metropolis began with the world's first omnibus from 1894.

    However, in the east of the Waldhof district, planned barracks apartments for the homeless and welfare recipients were built between 1921 and 1930. As the "Kulturverein Waldhof" writes on its website, these have been replaced by flat roof houses over time. The name "Benz Barracks" remained.
