    Rhine Ferry - Altrip/Mannheim 🚴‍♂️

The Altrip–Mannheim Rhine Ferry connects the industrial Mannheim district of Neckarau on the right bank of the Rhine with the community of Altrip on the left bank and the Blaue Adria recreation area.

The Altrip ferry was first mentioned in writing in 1262. In 1891, the first yaw ferry was purchased, which crossed the river using a longitudinal cable. However, due to increasing ship traffic, this method was replaced by a ferry with its own motor. The ferry currently in use has been operating year-round during the day. It transports vehicles weighing up to 16 tons, as well as bicycles and pedestrians. Regional bus line 98 is also carried on Monday to Friday. In 2012, the ferry was extended by seven meters, and a technically improved vessel is scheduled to be in operation from around 2020. Occasionally, the water level of the Rhine also presents a certain imponderable factor. For example, ferry service had to be suspended for almost one and a half months starting in mid-October 2018 due to low water levels, which temporarily fell below the historically lowest level of 92 cm (September 28, 2003) at the Mannheim gauge.
