Construction began in 1248 and is impressive in size, making it one of the most important works of North German brick Gothic architecture.
Like the entire old town, it was badly damaged by fire a few days before the end of the war in 1945.
In front of it, like a memorial, stands the large St. Mary's bell.
The church is now used for concerts.
