The Potsdamer Platz is a transport hub in the Berlin districts Mitte and Tiergarten in the district Mitte between the old city center in the east and the new West Berlin. As a double course system, it joins the Leipziger Platz to the west.
As part of the construction of the Berlin customs and Akizisemauer 1734 Potsdam Gate was built. There began since the late 18th century, the Berlin-Potsdam Chaussee (later Potsdamer Straße), which was an important link in the network of the Prussian state lake lakes. The green area to the west of the gate, the square in front of the Potsdam Thor, received its current name in 1831.
With the Potsdamer Fernbahnhof, the underground station as well as the numerous tram and omnibus lines, Potsdamer Platz was one of the busiest squares in Europe until the end of the Second World War and as early as 1924 received one of the first traffic lights on the continent. In the first forty years of the 20th century, the square and its streets were a popular meeting place for Berlin's political, social and cultural scene.
After the war, Potsdamer Platz formed a "border triangle" between the Soviet, British and American sectors in divided Berlin. From August 1961 on, the Berlin Wall passed over the square, which for almost three decades ended up being a marginal existence as an inner-city wasteland. After the fall of the wall on November 9, 1989, a new situation arose: just a few days later, a piece of the wall was broken off at Potsdamer Platz and a provisional border crossing was created. The newly built on the largely preserved road after 1990 terrain is one of the most prominent places in the city and is a tourist attraction.

Imposing architecture. Very busy during the day. Great in the evening and at night (#Filmkulisse).
