On the left bank of the Neckar in Stuttgart-Münster there is a wall of loess that has been designated as a natural monument of geological outcrop in the Freienstein loess.
Loess is a sediment. The fine rock was blown eastwards from the Upper Rhine Graben during the vegetation-free cold periods (ice ages) by the prevailing westerly winds and deposited in areas with lower wind speeds. Loess soils are very fertile.
