The memorial site Marienfelde is the central museum in Germany on the subject of flight and departure from the GDR.

Around four million people left the GDR in the direction of the Federal Republic between 1949 and 1990; 1.35 million of them passed through the 1953 founded emergency shelter in Berlin-Marienfelde. Here they were accommodated and cared for. Here they also went through the necessary procedures to obtain a residence permit for the Federal Republic and West Berlin.

Today an exhibition on the authentic site recalls the causes, course and consequences of the German-German escape movement. With its permanent exhibition, a diverse program of education and events, special exhibitions and research projects, the memorial site invites you to learn more about the flight and departure in divided Germany
