    Jean de Nivelles:

On the south turret of the Collegiate Saint Gertrude of Nivelles is a small warrior eight feet high (about 2.08 m), clothed in copper plates and in possession of a hammer. Its weight consists of 350 kg. His name “Jean de Nivelles”.

He is not part of a history hero much less is he a memorial. He is a simple local clock man.

In times long gone and on the highest public monuments there were watchmen who announced the enemy to the inhabitants, as well as the fires, etc...

They also announced the different times. Is it to preserve the memory of those watchers that iron men were made? That is quite possible.

Jean de Nivelles was born about 1400. He was placed on the tower of the town hall, the municipality was then in the lower part of the Grote Markt. There are no writings from this period. In 1525, it is the "man who strikes the hours" and in 1535 "l'homme de keouvre" ("the copper man").

He got his baptismal name during his transfer from the south turret to the collegiate in 1617.

The collegiate Romanesque Saint Gertrude's Church (consecrated in 1046), which was previously an abbey church where women were beaten to millitissa until the 17th century.[1] Remarkable is the gable of St. Peter with exuberant decoration. The cloister dates from the early 13th century. This cloister is partly Gothic, partly Romanesque. The church itself has a precious collection of furniture and forms a perfect architectural whole. The church was damaged during the war in May 1940. The crypt under the choir is the largest Romanesque in Belgium. Excavations were carried out in the years 1949-1951. During the excavations, a substructure of two churches was found: a Merovingian (7th century) and a Carolingian church (with tombs) from the 9th century. The heavy square upper section of the west tower - projecting above the massive west work - has been demolished in recent times and replaced by an octagonal drum topped by an octagonal spire in the style of the old church.

The collegiate St. Gertrude Church in the Belgian city of Nivelles is one of the oldest and largest existing Romanesque churches. It originally belonged to the Abbey of Nivelles, the double monastery founded by Gertrude of Nivelles in 648-649, around which the city of Nivelles grew. The current church building was consecrated in 1046 by the Liège bishop Waso in the presence of Emperor Henry III. After numerous transformations over the centuries, the Church of St. Gertrude, which was heavily bombed during the Second World War, was restored to its 11th/12th century appearance in 1948-1984. The surrounding abbey buildings were no longer erected.
