Tips

  • The Blankenese guide light line has been in existence since 1984 for ships traveling up the Elbe in the Blankenese district of Hamburg. The guide light, originally built in 1983/1984, which went into operation on November 29, 1984, was replaced in October 2020 by a new guide light line that was moved approximately 500 m to the southeast. To avoid confusion, the old lighthouses were demolished.

  • In September 2019, work began on the foundations of the two new lighthouses on the banks of the Elbe in Blankenese. Since the streets on the Blankeneser Ufer are very narrow, most of the material for the construction was delivered by ship. The new lower light is now located east of the Blankenese pier at Strandwegtreppe.
A 22 meter long access bridge leads from the Elbe embankment to a viewing platform at the lighthouse, from which you get a wonderful view of the ships passing by.
Since January 24, 2022, cargo ships with drafts of up to 13.50 meters have been able to sail independently of ebb and flow and a maximum of 14.50 meters depending on the tide. On average, a large freighter can carry around 1,000 containers more cargo.
Due to the deepening of the Elbe, the current speed of the tidal wave has increased. This causes more silt to settle than expected. The dredging ships are currently barely able to keep up with dredging away the silt so that the channel remains deep enough.
The new upper light was built 1100 m east of the lower light, at the Mühlenberg marina next to the Elbuferweg. The new upper light is the fourth highest lighthouse in Germany.

  • As part of the deepening of the Elbe, the Blankenese top fire was relocated to the Mühlenberg.
