Bega was the daughter of an Irish chieftain who fled to England to escape being married to a Norse prince. She landed in St Bees and lived as a hermit. She then journeyed to Northumbria, possibly via Bassenthwaite Lake where St Bega's church can be found.

Two long-distance trails between St Bees and Bassenthwaite Lake, St Bega's Way and St Bega's Way Back, pay homage to her journey. The former starts at the nearby priory and the latter ends there.
