Great area, but seen widely as it is often very crowded right in front of it. Away from the stones, however, there are wonderful hiking trails and many beautiful things to explore.

The impressive 40m high rock formation is one of the most remarkable natural and cultural monuments in Central Europe. From various places, such as here from the hiking cross, there is always a very beautiful view of the mystical rocks.

"An impressive natural and cultural monument are the Externsteine, a group of rocks made of Osningsandstein. This was formed in the lower Cretaceous period as a sea deposit. About 70 million years ago, the layer was folded up vertically by shifts in the earth's crust. The softer rocks were washed away by water and wind washed away and only the hard sandstone remained, which rises up today with its striking rocks.
In addition to the free-standing rock formation, there are nine other rocks that can hardly be made out in the shelter of the forest. These rock biotopes are of particular importance for rare animal and plant species, such as the dripped Spitzmoos, which can only be found in this area nationwide. Eagle owls have also been breeding in this area since 2006."

"...We can see the bizarre rocks from afar, which reach 40 meters high into the sky. Two of the thirteen rocks can be climbed via countless steps carved into the Externsteine..."

You can climb part of the rocks. After rainy days you should be careful. It is often overcrowded on weekends. It is also worth knowing that this place is haunted by esoteric groups at certain times, most notably the summer solstice and Walpurgis Night. Unfortunately, right-wing extremist groups sometimes also meet there.
